Description From Owner:
  • Finlayson Arm - After Roderick Finlayson (1818-92). A native of Ross-shire, he arrived in Canada in 1837 and entered the service of the VIBC.
  • He was second in command to Chief Trader Charles Ross when the latter was placed in charge of Fort Victoria in 1843. Upon Ross's death in 1844, Finlayson took over command of the fort, and it is he who must be considered the real father of Victoria.
  • Finlayson took a leading part in the political life of the infant colony of Vancouver Island. He became a Chief Factor in 1859 and retired in 1872. Also FINLAYSON CHANNEL, Milbanke Sound.
  • Malahat Ridge - Opinion is divided over the meaning of this Saanich Indian word.
  • One school champions ‘infested with caterpillars,' with reference to a year when the tent caterpillars stripped the trees of their leaves. The other school favours 'place where one gets bait.'
  • An earlier Indian name for the mountain was Yaas, the home of a legendary rainmaker the Indians believed that if one pointed at the mountain it would rain.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
