Description From Owner:
- Squilax - The authors vividly remember visiting an old Indian, Michel Toma, who was young when the CPR was building its transcontinental line at Squilax.
- He mentioned that a black bear had wandered out from the woods and along the cleared strip where the tracks were to be laid. The men laying the tracks asked the Indian onlookers what they called a black bear in their language.
- 'Squilax,' replied the Indians, and so this station got its name. (Only in the Chase or eastern dialect of the Shuswap Indian language is this the word for black bear.)
