Description From Owner:
  • D'Arcy Island after John D'Arcy, a mate on HMS Herald when she was in these waters in 1846. The Saanich Indian name for the island means 'arrive,' this being where the salmon first arrive when they are heading for the Fraser River to spawn.
  • Haro Strait - Named in 1790 by Quirnper after Gonzalo Lopez de Haro, his primo piloto (or first mate) on the Princesa Real.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
