Description From Owner:
  • Blackie Spit named after a Scot, Walter Blackie, the first blacksmith in New Westminster, who in 1875 bought the spit (six and a half acres) for a dollar an acre.
  • Kwomais Point - From the Straits Salish or Halkomelem Indian word meaning 'dog face.'
  • Nicomekl River - Carries the name of an Indian band wiped out by smallpox late in the eighteenth century.
  • Ocean Park - This name was chosen about 1910 by the Reverend W.P. Goard for his Ocean Park Syndicate,
  • made up of prominent Methodists in the Lower Mainland who wished to secure land for their church's future recreational and educational purposes. A church camp was founded here.
  • Surrey - Probably so named because it lies south of New Westminster, just' as the county of Surrey lies south of Westminster (part of London) in England. Surrey became a city in 1983.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
