Description From Owner:
  • Doc English Gulch - After Benjamin Franklin ('Doc') English. Born in St. Louis in 1841, he travelled overland to the Pacific with his father on the Oregon Trail when he was a boy of five.
  • Far from having an MD, he had a minimal formal education. 'Doc' English arrived in the Cariboo in 1860, driving cattle that he sold to the miners for meat.
  • Thereafter he had a varied career as a packer, storekeeper, and stock raiser in the Chilcotin, at Ashcroft, and in Venables Valley. An acute horse trader, he had a passion for horse racing.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
