Description From Owner:
- After 'Major' William Downie, who also had Downieville, California, named after him. In 1858 Governor Douglas, who thought very highly of Downie, employed him with J.W. McKay to explore the route south from Pemberton to Howe Sound.
- The next year Downie explored around Jervis and Bute Inlets, led an unsuccessful expedition to the Queen Charlotte Islands, but rehabilitated himself with a tremendous journey up the Skeena, then via Babine Lake to Fort St. James,
- and then by way of the Fraser to the Cariboo goldfields. In 1865 he led a party of gold-seekers from Washington Territory up the Columbia River to the Big Bend country north of modern Revelstoke.
