Phoenix - The mining town that grew up here around 1900 took its name from the Phoenix claim.
The name has proved prophetic, for repeatedly when Phoenix appeared dead it has come back to life. After the mine's initial closure in 1920, it was reopened and worked in 1924, 1936-42, and 1959-78.
