38 SOUTH SHORE RD |
British Columbia Tourism Region : Vancouver Island
Description From Owner:
- From an Island Halkomelem word meaning 'warm country' or 'land warmed by the sun.'
- The name originated because of a huge rock formation, on the side of Mount Tzuhalem, supposedly resembling a frog basking in the sun.
- Originally both Cowichan Lake and the settlement were known as Kaatza, Cowichan for 'big lake.'
- The Cowichan Indians are a large group who formerly ranged widely over the southern Strait of Georgia and had fishing rights in certain places on the mainland, including the mouth of the Fraser River.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
