Description From Owner:
Hammond Bay
- After Dr. A.R. Benson, a physician in the service of the HBC between 1857 and 1862. Lieutenant Charles Wilson, RE, remembered Dr. Benson as 'a great character, never seen without a pipe in his mouth &
- his rooms ... crowded with Indian curiosities, bird skins, geological specimens, books & tobacco in the most inextricable confusion.'
- The Nanaimo Indian name for Mount Benson, 'Wakesiah,' means 'mysterious, sinister, or forbidding.'
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
- Hammond Bay - After George Crispin Hammond, RN, navigating sublieutenant aboard the early steamship Beaver when, as a hired surveying vessel, she was active in these waters in 1867-70.
