After the famous English cartographers Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) and his nephew John Arrowsmith.
As the excellence of their maps was thoroughly appreciated, it is not surprising that in 1858 Captain G. H. Richards, RN, recommended adoption of the name to the Hydrographer of the Royal Navy.
