Description From Owner:
- 'Cheam' is derived from the Halkomelem word meaning '[place to] always get strawberries.'
- This name refers specifically to the island across from the village and present reserve.
- Whites have also used the name for today's Cheam Peak, but to the Indians the latter is Thleethleq, the wife of Mount Baker, who came to Thleethleq with her sisters, dog, and daughter and was turned to stone.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
