Description From Owner:
- Musqueam - This Indian village, now within the boundaries of Vancouver, marks the farthest point reached by Simon Fraser when he made his descent in 1808 of the river bearing his name.
- Because of the hostility of the Indians here, Fraser decided against any exploration of the coast. Returning to an unidentified village above New Westminster, he found the natives there curious to know
- 'how we had the good fortune to escape the cruelty of the Masquiamme.'
- Musqueam is Halkomelem and means 'place always to get [the root of] irislike plant.' Unfortunately the plant is now extinct here.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
