After Sir Alexander Mackenzie. The settlement is at the most southerly point on the Fraser River reached by Mackenzie in 1793, before he partly retraced his steps and struck out west to reach the Pacific.
Fort Alexandria was the last fort to be established by the NWC before it merged in 1821 with the Hudson's Bay Company.
