British Columbia Tourism Region : Cariboo Chilcotin Coast
Description From Owner:
Vedan CreekAlkali Lake
- Chilcotin River - The name can be translated as 'ochre river people.' Ochre here refers not to the colour but to the mineralized substance (usually red or yellow) much prized by the Indians for use as a base for paint or dye.
- Vedan Creek - After Louis Vedan, who died in the Old Men's Home, Kamloops, in 1954 at an age of more than 100, if we accept his own estimate.
- Earlier, on his remote ranch, he had so emancipated himself from an awareness of time that he would ask his rare visitor, Indian or white, not the day but the month. He usually got his hay in late and lost many cattle in consequence.
- Alkali Lake - Got its name from a landmark patch of alkali here.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
