- In 1895 Lady Aberdeen noted in her diary, 'Opposite Pilot Bay a gentleman of the name of Balfour has built a private residence just because of the beauty of the place. And he is fully justified.'
- Balfour was superintendent of bridges during construction of the CPR's Crowsnest line.
- Kokanee Creek - From the Okanagan Indian word meaning 'little salmon,' applied to the landlocked sockeye salmon. (See also Kickininee Park.)
- Queens Bay - Named in honour of Queen Victoria by the English who settled here around the end of the nineteenth century.
