- From the Heiltsuk (Bella Bella) Indian word that means 'person from Bella Coola.' The word refers to the entire Bella Coola ethnic region, not to any village in particular.
- Early versions of the name show a wild divergence in spellings, as white men tried to cope with the guttural sounds of the Indian tongue Billa Whulha, Bell-houla, Billichoola, Bill-Whoalla, etc.
- Mackenzie called the settlement of Bella Coola 'Rascal's Village.'
- Eutsuk Lake - According to Father Morice, the first white man to see this lake, his Indian companions named it after him.
- The authorities in Victoria refused to accept Morice's 'Morice Lake' and renamed it Eutsuk, an almost untranslatable name, used in the sense that this lake was very far off (from Ootsa Lake).
- Kitlope River - From the Coast Tsimshian Indian word meaning 'people of the rock.'
- Labouchere Channel - After the HBC paddlewheel steamer Labouchere, which made her maiden voyage to British Columbia in 1858-9. She was named after the Rt. Hon. Henry Labouchere, Britain's Colonial Secretary from 1855 to 1858.
- Nieumiamus Creek - The name comes from a Bella Coola Indian word meaning 'place of blackflies.'
- Nooskulla Creek - From a Bella Coola Indian word meaning 'place of red huckleberries.'
