Description From Owner:
  • After Thomas Hirst Bracken, first postmaster (1906-12). He returned to England after his hotel here burned down. The Squamish Indian word for the Brackendale area is 'See-yeahchum,' meaning 'full.'
  • Cheakamus River taken from the Squamish Indian word meaning 'salmon weir place.'
  • Mount Garibaldi - Also GARIBALDI PARK. After the Italian patriot and soldier (1807-82). A colourful story has it that Mount Garibaldi was named by an Italian serving as a sailor on a survey ship, the mountain being in view on Garibaldi's birthday.
  • All we can say with certainty is that the name, whatever its origins, was officially conferred by Captain Richards of HM survey ship Plumper sometirne around 1860. Garibaldi Park was created in 1927.
  • Garibaldi station on the BCR was formerly Daisy Lake station.
  • Lovely Water Lake - Not the invention of a real estate agent, this name was given in 1914 by two mountaineers, Basil Darling and Alan Morkill. (See Tantalus Range.)
  • Nip and Tuck Peaks - So named since they appear to be of much the same height.
  • Mount Pandareus - This peak in the Tantalus Range is named after Pandareus, whose golden mastiff, according to Greek myth, was stolen by Tantalus.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.

  • Pillchuck Creek

  • This is the Chinook jargon for 'red water,' and the water here is a reddish colour.

  • Pillchuck Creek

  • Tantalus Range

  • According to the ancient Greek myth, to punish Tantalus the gods afflicted him with thirst and hunger while keeping him lashed to a tree whose fruit always eluded his grasp; similarly, water that reached to his neck always receded when he sought to drink.

Dr. N.M. Carter explained the naming of the range thus: 'the view of the exciting-appearing peaks in this unnamed and unclimbed range tantalized early climbers of Mt. Garibaldi and suggested the legend of King Tantalus.' (See 'Early Climbs in the Tantalus Range,' Canadian Alpine Journal [19641:74-7.)

The first ascent of Mount Tantalus itself was finally made in 1911 by Basil Darling, J. Davies, and Alan Morkill.
