- In November 1852 Peter Brown, a young Orkneyman employed as a shepherd in the Saanich area, was murdered by two Indians. One of them, a Cowichan, was soon captured.
- The other, belonging to the Nanaimo band, was pursued up this stream by nine of the HBC'S French-Canadian scouts, aided by sixteen sailors from the Royal Navy.
- After a desperate chase, the Nanaimo tried to shoot it out on the banks of the river. However, his powder was wet, and he was soon captured.
- With his accomplice he was hanged on Gallows Point near Nanaimo, his chase and death adding two more items to our list of British Columbia place names.
- Extension - Having widely advertised the excellence of its Wellington coal, the Wellington Collieries Co., when it opened a mine here, thirteen miles from Wellington, called the place Wellington Extension.
- The name was abbreviated when a post office was established. Earlier the locality was known as Southfield because of its position relative to Nanaimo.
- Gallows Point - Two Indian murderers were hanged here in 1853.
