Description From Owner:
  • From the Island Halkomelem word meaning 'bitten breast.' The horseshoe shape of the bay reminded Indians of the bite that a frenzied shaman would inflict upon a spectator during certain tribal ceremonies.
  • Governor Rock - Sardonically named by Captain G.H. Richards in 1859 when, steaming at full speed toward Victoria in response to an urgent message from Governor Douglas, he ran HMS Plumper on this previously unknown rock.
  • Stuart Channel - After Captain Charles E. Stuart (1817-63), an experienced HBC officer lent to HMS Virago as a guide by Governor Douglas in 1853. Later Stuart was in charge of the company's Nanaimo post. Finally he became a free trader.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
