- He served as both a member of the Legislative Council and a Member of Parliament.
- In 1881 Dewdney was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the North West Territory, serving through the Riel Rebellion. He was federal Minister of the Interior 1888-92 and Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia 1892-7.
- Nicomen Island - This name (pronounced 'Nickcöhrn-men') is derived from a Halkomelem word meaning 'level part' or, possibly, 'part [people] travel to.'
- Norrish Creek - After William Henry Norrish, pioneer Scottish-Canadian farmer here.
