Description From Owner:
  • Fauquier - After F.G. Fauquier, pioneer rancher and fruit grower. In the 1890s he served as government agent, mining recorder, customs officer, and first policeman at Nakusp.
  • Heart Creek - From the shape of the cirque at the head of the creek.
  • Robinson Creek - After John Moore Robinson (1855-1935), the founder of Peachland, Summerland, and Naramata.
  • Born in Ontario of Irish descent, he went in 1879 to Manitoba, where he edited the Portage La Prairie Review, founded the Brandon Times, and became an MIA. He came to Rossland in 1890.
  • Visiting a ranch near today's Peachland, he was so impressed by the peaches grown here that he founded his Okanagan towns and brought out hundreds of prairie families as settlers.
  • Whatshan Lake - This name was in use as early as 1866. Its derivation is uncertain.
  • Barnes Creek - After John Christopher Barnes, who pre-empted land above Ashcroft in 1868.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
