Description From Owner:
  • Hobson Lake - After John B. Hobson, at the end of the nineteenth century considered one of the world's best hydraulic mining engineers.
  • He was responsible for the famous Bullion Pit at Hydraulic. He always travelled in style, and when he went up to the Cariboo in the summer, he hired the Dufferin fancy four-horse stagecoach.
  • Horsefly - The settlement of Horsefly was originally called Harper's Camp after Thaddeus Harper, pioneer rancher and miner. The present name comes from the horseflies that can be a great nuisance here in the summer.
  • McKinley Lake - After Archibald McKinley, a clerk in the service of the HBC, who in 1840 married Sarah Julia, daughter of Chief Factor Peter Skene Ogden. A son ran a store and farmed at Lac la Hache.
  • Moffat Creek - After Tom Moffitt (note the spelling), who carne into the Cariboo with Peter Dunlevy's party in 1859.
  • Despite the warnings of his partners that this creek showed none of the signs of a gold-bearing stream, he insisted upon working it and proved that they were right.
  • Mount Ray - After John Bunyan (Johnny) Ray, who came into the Cariboo in 1908. Because of kindnesses shown to the Indians, they invited him to use their hunting grounds in this area. He also trapped, and established a farm.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
