Description From Owner:
  • Hecate Strait - After the Royal Navy's survey ship Hecate, commanded by Captain G.H. Richards, which worked on this coast in 1860-2. At least nine other places or features in British Columbia help to immortalize Hecate.
  • Kitkatla - A Coast Tsimshian Indian name meaning 'people of the salt' that is, village by the sea.
  • Principe Channel - Named Canal del Principe in 1792 by Jacinto Caamaño, commanding the Spanish frigate Aranzazu.
  • Shakes Islands - After a renowned chief of the Kitkatla Indians who died in 1901, Shakes being an anglicized version of his hereditary Indian name.
  • Captain Walbran relates how he gave Queen Victoria a potlatch gift of $100, to which she responded with two valuable rugs and a steel engraving of herself.
  • Years before his death, he erected a monument to himself Its inscription read, 'In memory of William Ewart Gladstone Sheuksh, Great Chief of the Kitkatlahs.'
  • Banks Island - Named by Captain Duncan of the Princess Royal in 1788 after Sir Joseph Banks, president of the Royal Society.
