British Columbia Tourism Region : Northern BC
Description From Owner:
- Greenville - After the Reverend A.E. Green, Methodist missionary in the area from 1876 to 1889. Its Nisgha Indian name is 'Lach Al Zap,' meaning 'at the village,' or 'the place of the village.'
- Wales Island - Takes its name from Wales Point, on its southern shore, named by Captain Vancouver after William Wales, astronomer and mathematician,
- 'to whose kind instruction, in the early part of my life, I am indebted for that information which has enabled me to traverse and delineate these lonely regions.'
- Wales had accompanied Captain Cook on his second great voyage, on which the youthful Vancouver had also served.
- Anyox Creek - From the Nisgha word meaning 'place of hiding.' Close to where this stream flows into the inlet, at Granby Bay, was an important copper mine and smelter operated by the Granby Mining Company.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
