British Columbia Tourism Region : Vancouver, Coast, & Mountains
Description From Owner:
- Desolation Sound so called by Captain Vancouver because of both the gloomy aspect of the coast and the lack of fish and berries.
- Hernando Island - After Hernando Cortes, the conqueror of Mexico. Nearby Cortes Island was named by Galiano and Valdes in 1792.
- Savary Island - Captain Vancouver notes in his journal for June 1792 that he sailed past 'an island lying in an east and west direction, which I named Savary's Island.' He does not tell us who Savary was, and nobody has been able to identify him.
- Because of its shape, the Indians called this island Ayhus, meaning 'doubleheaded serpent.' This serpent was trying to return to its cave on Hurtado Point when the Transformer came by and changed it into this island.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
