Description From Owner:
Hankin Range
- Hankin Range - After Philip James Hankin, who first arrived on this coast as a mate on HMS Plumper, then served as a lieutenant on HMS Hecate.
- Back in England in 1864, he left the navy in order to return to British Columbia, and in that year he became superintendent of police for Vancouver Island. In 1869 he became Colonial Secretary of British Columbia.
- Karmutzen Range - From the Kwakwala Indian word for 'waterfall.' Karmutzen is the Indian name for Nimpkish Lake and was probably given because of the numerous waterfalls on the steep west side of the lake.
- Merville - When this area was developed by returned soldiers after World War I, they named the settlement Merville after the place in France where the Canadians had had their first field headquarters.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
