Description From Owner:
  • Egeria Mountain - After HMS Egeria. The last ship of the Royal Navy to be stationed in BC waters, she was engaged in surveys from 1898 to 1910.
  • Grenville Channel - Named by Captain Vancouver after William Wyndham Grenville, Baron Grenville (1759-1834). Grenville was an able politician, at one time Speaker of the House of Commons and later Home Secretary.
  • Grenville's brother-in-law, the Hon. Thomas Pitt, who inherited the title of Lord Camelford, was one of Vancouver's midshipmen. He proved so unsatisfactory that Vancouver had to discharge him at Hawaii in 1794.
  • Oona River - From the Coast Tsimshian word for 'skunk cabbage,' a plant that flourishes here.
  • Porcher Island - After Commander E.A. Porcher, who was on this coast in 1865-8 commanding HMS Sparrowhawk.
  • Spokshute Mountain - This is the old name of the site of Port Essington and comes from the Tsimshian Indian word meaning 'autumn encampment.'
  • It was here that the Indians camped while on their way down the Nass River to winter on ice-free Metlakatla Channel.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
