Description From Owner:
  • The site of this settlement was known to the Indians as 'Spokshute,' meaning 'the autumn camp ground.'
  • Captain Vancouver applied the name Port Essington to the estuary of the Skeena, failing to realize that it was a river mouth.
  • In giving this name, he was honouring his friend Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Sir William Essington (1753-1816).
  • Later the name Port Essington was limited to a trading post established by Robert Cunningham in 1871 near the mouth of the Ecstall River.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
