Description From Owner:
- Skidegate - The Haidas had the practice of referring to a village sometimes by its own proper name and sometimes by the hereditary name of its principal chief.
- Skidegate comes from 'Skit-ei-get,' said to mean 'red paint stone,' and was the hereditary name of the principal chief of the village (the name of which can be translated as 'pool of boulders village').
- Samuel Patterson records that in July 1805 his ship, the Juno of Bristol, 'anchored at Skittagates.' Mention of 'Skettegats' was made in 1826 by Chief Factor McLoughlin of the HBC.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
