Description From Owner:
  • Chonat Bay from the Kwakwala Indian word meaning 'where coho salmon are found.'
  • Maurelle Island - After Francisco Antonio Maurelle, second in command aboard the Sonora when Quadra took her up the coast in 1775, probably as far north as the Nass River.
  • Okisollo Channel - From the Kwakwala Indian word meaning 'little passage or channel.'
  • Reid Island - After Captain James M. Reid (1802-68) of the HBC'S maritime service.
  • In 1854 he had the misfortune to run his brigantine Vancouver onto Rose Spit, QCT, The Indians, intent on plundering the boat, so effectively prevented attempts to refloat her that Captain Dodd of the Beaver poured oil over her and set her on fire.
  • This was the end of Captain Reid's sea-going career.
  • Waiatt Bay - From the Kwakwala Indian word meaning 'where there is herring spawn.'
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
