Description From Owner:
  • West Point Grey - Named by Captain Vancouver 'in compliment to my friend Captain George Grey of the Navy.' Captain Grey (1767-1828) commanded HMS Victory, Jervis's flagship at the Battle of St. Vincent in 1797.
  • Later he commanded HMS Ville de Paris, the flagship of Jervis (now Earl St. Vincent) during his blockade of the French fleet in Brest.
  • Grey subsequently commanded the royal yacht Amelia. In 1814, when commissioner of Portsmouth dockyard, he was knighted by the Prince Regent.
  • The Spaniards, here a year before Vancouver, named Point Grey Punta de Langara, in honour of Admiral Don Juan de Langara.
