Whaletown Rd |
British Columbia Tourism Region : Vancouver Island
Description From Owner:
- Marina Island - After the Indian woman who was interpreter, adviser, and mistress to Hernando Cortes in his conquest of Mexico. From 1849 to 1906, it was Mary Island, but then the Spanish name was restored.
- Whaletown - There was a whaling station here in the 1870s. Whaletown Bay was known to the Klahuse Indians as Teck-tum, or 'sharpening place,' for, before contact with whites, Indians butchered whales here.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
