Description From Owner:
- Whyac - From an old Nitinaht Indian word meaning 'open mouth,' used for the openings of fish traps. The Indians applied this name to the village because they thought the nearby canyon resembled a trap opening.
- In 1864 Dr. Brown of the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition described the village:
- ‘Why-ack’ is a large fortified village protected by pickets from the sea dashing in breaks on the beach, or rushing through the narrow entrance of the inlet; so difficult is it to land that the
- Nittenahts [Nitinatsl carry it with a high hand over the neighbouring tribes.
