Friendly Cove - Although visited by Captain Cook while he was at Nootka in 1778, the cove did not receive its name until James Strange put in here in 1786.
The local Indians proved decidedly unfriendly during the Cook Bicentennial of 1978, not permitting white visitors to come ashore. The Indian name for the village here, Yuquot, means 'village exposed to the wind.'
Yuquot - From the Nootka Indian word meaning 'village exposed to the winds,' or 'windy place.'
