Description From Owner:
  • Originally Queenstown, but this name was rejected by the postal authorities as duplicative. Accordingly the owner of the townsite renamed the settlement in 1913 after Herbert S. Clements, MP,
  • who reciprocated by getting Ottawa to build a government wharf here.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
  • Hippa Island - Named by Captain George Dixon in 1787. The appearance of an Indian settlement here reminded him of a Maori 'hippa' or 'pa' (fortified village) in New Zealand.
  • Juskatla Inlet - Over a century ago, G.M. Dawson gave 'belly of the rapid' as the meaning of Juskatla. Other meanings that have been given are 'strong tide inlet' and 'inlet on the inside of Djus Island.'
  • Vladimir J. Krajina Ecological Reserve - After Dr. Vladimir Krajina of the Department of Botany, UBC. During World War Il, Dr. Krajina, a botanist and ecologist at Charles University in Prague, was a leader of Czech underground intelligence operations.
  • After the Communist takeover, he escaped and came to British Columbia. He was largely responsible for the province becoming the first to create ecological reserves and provided the province with a classification of its biogeoclimatic zones.
  • Makai Point - Named by the Hydrographic Service after Makai, a Tlingit Indian adopted into the Haida band at Masset.
  • He was a violent and dangerous man, and when he was converted to Christianity by the Anglican missionary W.H. Collison, the Haidas were much impressed. (See W.H. Collison, In the Wake of the War Canoe, pp. 198-202.)
