Description From Owner:
  • Takes its name from the Barriére River, named as early as 1828.
  • The 'barriére' was almost certainly a fish trap such as G.M. Dawson saw here and described as 'two weirs or fences, each of which stretched completely across the stream.'
  • Exlou - A curious name coined to show that this settlement is just outside the village of Louis Creek.
  • Kikwilli Creek - Kikwilli is Chinook jargon meaning 'underneath' or 'below.' The Interior of British Columbia is dotted with kikwilli holes, shallow depressions where the Indians once had semisubterranean winter dwellings.
  • Louis Creek - According to the CNR, the creek is named after Chief Louis of the Kamloops Indians, who used to come here to fish for salmon.
  • On the other hand, Mary Balf, formerly of the Kamloops Museum, says that the name comes from Louis Barrie, a prospector who found some gold in the area in 1860.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
