Description From Owner:
- After Whitfield Chase (1820-96). A native of New York state, Chase came west over the Oregon Trail in 1852. For some years he worked as a carpenter and unprofitably prospected for gold on the Fraser and Thompson Rivers.
- In 1865 he established a ranch where the South Thompson runs out from Little Shuswap Lake. He married Elizabeth, a Shuswap Indian woman, 'a wonderful person.' He prospered and raised a large family.
- In 1908, when the Adams River Lumber Company laid out the townsite, James A Magee, secretary of the company, declined to have the new settlement named after himself and insisted that it should be given the name of the first settler in the district.
- Niskonlith Lake - Named after a well-known Shuswap chief in the mid-1800s.
- With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
