Description From Owner:
  • From the Halkomelem word meaning 'stinking of fish slime.'
  • During a great winter famine in traditional times, the Coquitlam people sold themselves into slavery to the more numerous and prosperous Kwantlen band (whose name rneans 'tireless runners').
  • The Coquitlams, while butchering salmon for their masters, became covered with fish slime hence the name.
  • Pitt River - Also PITT LAKE and PITT MEADOWS. The first mention of 'Pitt's River' comes in 1827 in the journal of James McMillan, the founder of Fort Langley.
  • He apparently named it in honour of William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), British Prime Minister during much of the Napoleonic Wars.
  • With permission from G.P.V and Helen B. Akrigg 1997 British Columbia Place Names. UBC Press.
