In November 1852 Peter Brown, a young Orkneyman employed as a shepherd in the Saanich area, was murdered by two Indians. One of them, a Cowichan, was soon captured.

So named by J.D. Pemberton in 1852 because it was the site of an abandoned Indian village. During his survey Pemberton also spotted that here was a good exit for ships leaving Nanaimo harbour.

Dodd Narrows - After Captain Charles Dodd, who came to the Pacific coast in 1835 as second officer on the HBC'S steamboat Beaver, which he commanded from 1843 to 1852. Subsequently he became a Chief Factor in the Company's service.
